The treatment

What scalp micropigmentation actually is, and who it suits

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic tattooing technique built specifically for the scalp. Pigment is deposited in the upper layer of the skin in tiny, individual dots that mimic the look of a shaved hair follicle. Placed at the right depth, in the right shade, at the right density, they read to the eye as hair rather than as ink. It is not a hair system, it is not a transplant, and there is nothing to glue on, comb over or replace every few months.

Who it is for

Men and women with receding hairlines, a thinning crown, diffuse thinning, alopecia areata or totalis, scarring from surgery or accidents, and visible donor-strip or FUE scars from a hair transplant. SMP works on all skin tones because the pigment shade is matched to you rather than pulled from a fixed palette.

When people book it

Usually at one of three points: when the hairline has receded far enough that photographs start being avoided, when shaving down leaves a visible contrast between bare scalp and remaining hair, or after a transplant that produced a scar rather than the density that was promised.

What it changes

A defined hairline you can shape to your face, an even tone across the crown so overhead lighting stops exposing the scalp, and the freedom to keep hair clipped short without the loss being the first thing anyone notices.

Why the practitioner matters

Depth, angle, needle configuration and pigment dilution all change how a dot heals. Too deep and it spreads into a blue-grey blur within a year; too shallow and it fades out in months. Judgement built over hundreds of hours is the difference between hair and a helmet.

What waiting costs you

Hair loss does not stay still, and neither does a bad SMP job

Waiting rarely makes the decision easier. The pattern widens, the contrast between scalp and hair grows, and habits build up around hiding it: the same cap, the same seat with your back to the window, the fibres that streak on a wet day. Meanwhile, the cheap fixes quietly cost more than the treatment does.

The pattern keeps expanding

A hairline that only needs edge work today may need full crown coverage in two years. Larger areas take more sessions and more pigment, so the price of the same result rises with the delay.

Concealer spend adds up silently

Fibres, sprays, thickening shampoos and replacement hair systems are a recurring cost with no end date. SMP is a one-off treatment with a maintenance touch-up, not a monthly subscription to hiding it.

Poor work has to be removed first

Over-deep or badly shaded SMP done cheaply elsewhere migrates and turns blue. Correcting it means laser removal sessions before any new pigment can go in: a longer, costlier route than getting it right the first time.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Choosing a practitioner on price alone, then paying twice when the work needs removing.
  • Asking for a hairline that suits a 20-year-old face when the rest of the head reads 40; it never looks natural.
  • Booking with someone who offers SMP as one of a dozen unrelated beauty treatments rather than as their craft.
  • Expecting a full result from a single sitting instead of layered sessions that let pigment settle.
  • Sun-exposing a fresh scalp, or shaving over it too early, and then blaming the fade on the technique.
  • Not asking to see the practitioner's training certification, licence or insurance before booking.

The process

Four stages from first phone call to finished hairline

Most people put SMP off because they cannot picture what happens on the day. Here is the whole route, including the free stage at the start and the free stage at the end.

Start with the free consultation
  1. 01

    Free consultation and scalp assessment

In the Workington clinic or over the phone to start. Brett looks at your pattern of loss, skin type and remaining hair, and tells you plainly what SMP will and will not achieve on your head. No deposit is taken at this stage.

  2. 02

    Hairline design and shade match

Your hairline is drawn onto the scalp and adjusted with you in the mirror before anything permanent happens: mapped to your face shape, age and natural growth pattern. Pigment is then diluted to match your own hair colour and skin tone.

  3. 03

    First session: foundation layer

The base density is laid down across the treatment area. It looks lighter than the finished result by design; the first pass sets structure, not final depth.

  4. 04

    Follow-up sessions: building density

Sessions are spaced to let the skin settle, with each pass adding depth, refining the hairline edge and blending into existing hair so there is no visible border between treated and untreated scalp.

  5. 05

Free touch-up within 8 weeks, then aftercare

Once the final session has healed, you come back in for a complimentary touch-up so any spot that has softened is corrected. You leave with written aftercare covering washing, sun exposure, moisturising and long-term maintenance.

The benefits

What a properly built SMP result gives you

Speed

A visible change from session one

Unlike a transplant, there is no 12-month growth wait. The foundation layer is visible immediately and the full result is finished within weeks, not years.

Cost

£1,200 once, not £40 a month forever

A full treatment is a fixed £1,200. Density work on thinning hair is £200 per session. Compare that against years of fibres, sprays and replacement hair systems.

Longevity

Years of wear, not weeks

Pigment placed at the correct depth holds its shape long-term and softens gradually rather than washing out. Periodic maintenance keeps the edge crisp.

Reliability

No daily upkeep

Nothing to apply before leaving the house, nothing that streaks in rain, nothing that shifts at the gym or in the pool.

Safety

Licensed, insured, single-use

Local authority licensed premises, single-use needles and cartridges, and full public liability and professional indemnity cover.

Peace of mind

One practitioner, start to finish

The person who designs your hairline carries out every session and is the person you ring afterwards. Nothing is handed to a junior.

In detail

Techniques, variations and the situations SMP is used in

Hairline restoration and design

The hairline is the single most scrutinised part of any SMP result, because it is the part people see first and from closest range. A natural hairline is not a straight line; it has a soft, broken edge, slight asymmetry, and density that fades rather than stops.

Brett designs the hairline against your face shape, forehead height and the way your remaining hair grows, then builds a broken front edge with lighter, scattered impressions so it blends instead of announcing itself.

  • Receding temples and a widow's peak restored proportionally
  • Broken, softened front edge rather than a hard tattooed line
  • Design agreed with you in the mirror before any pigment goes in

Density boost for thinning hair

If you still have hair but the scalp shows through it, particularly under strip lighting or in photographs, density work fills the visual gap. Pigment is placed between existing hairs so the contrast between pale scalp and darker hair disappears.

This is charged at £200 per session, and the number of sessions depends on the area being treated. It suits diffuse thinning, a thinning crown, and women's hair loss where the parting has widened.

  • Crown and vertex thinning
  • Widened partings and diffuse female pattern loss
  • Blending into hair kept at longer lengths

Scar and hair transplant camouflage

Donor-strip scars, FUE dot scarring, surgical scars and accident scarring all present differently to normal scalp: the tissue is smoother, less absorbent and often paler. Pigment behaves differently in scar tissue, so it is worked more conservatively and in more passes.

The aim is to reduce contrast so the scar stops drawing the eye, then blend the surrounding density so there is no obvious patch where treatment starts and stops.

  • Linear donor-strip (FUT) scars
  • FUE punch scarring across the donor area
  • Surgical, burn and accident scarring on the scalp

Alopecia and full-scalp coverage

For alopecia areata, patchy loss can be treated so the bald patches match surrounding density. For alopecia totalis or a fully shaved head, coverage is built across the whole scalp to recreate a consistently shaved look.

Full-scalp work needs careful shade control: too dark and it reads as a solid cap under daylight, so pigment is diluted and layered.

Pigment, needles and aftercare

Single-use needles and cartridges are used for every client. Pigment shade is diluted per client rather than applied straight from the bottle, because scalp pigment that is too dark or too blue-based is what causes the grey helmet look years later.

Aftercare is simple but non-negotiable in the first days: keep the scalp dry for the advised window, no gym or sauna, no direct sun, and no shaving over fresh work. Long term, moisturising and a hat or SPF in strong sun keep the pigment stable.

Men, women and correction work

Men most often want a defined hairline and crown coverage to make a shaved head look intentional. Women more often want density through the parting and crown while keeping length, which is a lighter, more diffuse application.

Correction of previous SMP carried out elsewhere is also handled here, sometimes with reworking, and where pigment has migrated or turned blue, with Pico laser removal first before rebuilding.

Questions

Scalp micropigmentation questions, answered honestly

How much does scalp micropigmentation cost in Cumbria?

A full SMP treatment at the Workington clinic is £1,200. Density sessions for thinning hair are £200 per session. Your consultation is free, and a touch-up within 8 weeks of your final session is included at no cost.

How many sessions will I need and how long does it take?

SMP is built over multiple sessions so density can be layered and the pigment allowed to settle between passes. Your exact number of sessions and their spacing is agreed at your free consultation, based on the size of the area and your pattern of loss.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe it as very manageable, closer to a light scratching sensation than a conventional tattoo. Brett works at a steady pace, checks in throughout, and breaks the session where needed so you stay comfortable.

How long does SMP last?

Pigment placed at the correct depth holds for years and softens gradually rather than disappearing. Sun exposure, skin type and how often you exfoliate all affect the pace. Periodic maintenance sessions keep the hairline crisp: the first touch-up, within 8 weeks of your final session, is free.

Will it look natural, or obvious?

That comes down to shade dilution, dot size, depth and hairline design. Pigment is matched to your own hair and skin tone, and the front edge is built broken and soft rather than as a hard line. The result is designed to hold up at conversational distance, which is where it is actually judged.

Does it work on my skin tone and hair loss type?

Yes. SMP suits all skin tones because the pigment shade is mixed to match you. It treats pattern baldness, diffuse thinning, alopecia, surgical and accident scarring, and hair transplant scars.

What is the guarantee?

Every full SMP treatment includes a complimentary touch-up within 8 weeks of your final session. Pigment settles as it heals, and that touch-up is where the finish is perfected, at no extra cost, as standard.

Can you fix or remove SMP done somewhere else?

Yes. Brett is fully qualified in Pico laser tattoo removal (Pico and YAG) and treats previous scalp micropigmentation as well as body tattoos. Depending on the state of the work, it can be reworked, lightened, or removed and rebuilt.

Do you have evening or weekend appointments?

The clinic is open Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm, and Sunday by appointment only, so sessions can be fitted around shift patterns and work.

Do I have to travel to Workington?

All treatments take place in the dedicated treatment room at Unit 6, Kerry Park Industrial Estate, Workington CA14 3TT, with parking on site. Clients travel in from Carlisle, Whitehaven, Maryport, Cockermouth, Penrith, Keswick, Wigton and across Cumbria.
