SMP softens over the years; that is normal. A maintenance appointment restores the contrast and re-sharpens the hairline in a single visit, whether the original work was done here or elsewhere.
Free review of your existing SMP. You will be told whether a touch-up is due yet or whether it can wait.

The treatment
Why SMP needs occasional maintenance
Scalp micropigmentation is long-lasting rather than permanent in the tattoo sense. Pigment sits in the upper dermis and gradually softens as skin renews and sunlight does its work. That is by design: it fades evenly rather than shifting colour badly, and a short maintenance session restores it. Most clients return every few years, and the appointment is far shorter than the original treatment.
What fades first
Contrast at the hairline usually softens before the crown, because the front takes the most direct sun exposure.
How often
Typically every three to five years, though sun exposure, skin type and how dark the original work was all shift that timeline.
A short appointment
A refresh is usually one session rather than three, because the pattern and design already exist and only need re-saturating.
Work from other clinics welcome
You do not have to have had the original treatment here. Brett will review existing work and advise honestly on what it needs.
What waiting costs you
What happens when maintenance is left too long
Nothing dramatic goes wrong if you leave SMP alone, but the longer faded work is left, the more likely you are to end up with a patchy result or to be talked into a full retreatment you did not need.
Uneven fading
Sun-exposed areas lighten faster, so the front can look washed out while the crown still holds tone. Left long enough, the mismatch becomes noticeable.
Being sold a full retreatment
Faded work usually needs a refresh, not a restart. Somewhere that only quotes for full treatments has little reason to tell you that.
Over-darkening on the refresh
Refreshing faded SMP too heavily produces the flat, dark cap look. Matching the original density is more skilled work than simply going darker.
Mistakes we see most often
Waiting until the work looks obviously patchy before booking a review.
Assuming a touch-up costs the same as the original treatment.
Refreshing at home with any product marketed as a scalp concealer.
Skipping sun protection, which is the single biggest cause of fading.
Going darker than the original tone out of impatience.
Believing you cannot be seen because the first practitioner has closed.
The process
How a maintenance appointment runs
Short, focused and priced accordingly. The review is free whether or not you go ahead.
Pigment is deposited in the upper dermis, where skin cell turnover and UV exposure gradually break it down. The result softens in contrast rather than changing shape.
That gradual softening is why well-executed SMP ages acceptably even when a refresh is overdue; it goes lighter, not blotchy, provided the original work was placed correctly.
What affects the timeline
Sun exposure is the dominant factor. Outdoor workers and anyone who does not use sun protection on the scalp will fade faster.
Skin type, immune response, how deep the original pigment was placed and how dark the initial treatment was all shift the interval too.
Sun exposure and outdoor work
Skin type and turnover rate
Original depth and saturation
Frequency of shaving and exfoliation
Refreshing work done elsewhere
Plenty of clients come in with SMP from another clinic, sometimes because the original practitioner is no longer trading.
Existing work is reviewed on its merits. Where the design is sound, a refresh is straightforward; where it is not, the honest answer may be correction rather than maintenance.
When a touch-up is not the right answer
If the underlying hairline is set too low, the tone is wrong or the dots have blurred, adding pigment makes the problem worse rather than better.
In those cases the route is usually laser lightening followed by a redesign, covered on the old SMP removal and correction page.
Protecting your result between visits
Sunscreen or a hat on bright days is the single most effective thing you can do to extend the interval between refreshes.
Moisturised scalp holds a better matte finish, and heavy exfoliation should be avoided directly over treated areas.
Booking around your schedule
Maintenance appointments are short, which makes them easy to fit into an evening or a Saturday morning.
Clinic hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm, and Sunday by appointment.

Questions
Touch-up and maintenance questions, answered honestly
Anything not covered here, ask Brett directly on 07426 938460.
How often does SMP need topping up?
Typically every three to five years, depending on sun exposure, skin type and how dark the original work was. A free review will tell you whether yours is due.
Can you refresh SMP done at another clinic?
Yes. Plenty of clients come in with work done elsewhere. It is reviewed on its merits and refreshed if the underlying design is sound.
How much does a touch-up cost?
Considerably less than a full treatment. It is quoted per session after a free review, based on the area and degree of fading.
How long does a maintenance appointment take?
Usually a single session rather than the three needed for a full treatment, because the pattern already exists and only needs re-saturating.
Will the refresh match my existing work?
Pigment is matched to your current tone rather than the original shade, so the refresh blends into what is on your scalp now.
What if my SMP has faded unevenly?
That is common: the hairline usually fades before the crown because it takes more sun. The refresh concentrates on restoring even contrast across the whole scalp.
Can I make my SMP last longer?
Yes. Sun protection is the single biggest factor. A hat or scalp sunscreen on bright days meaningfully extends the interval between refreshes.
What if a touch-up will not fix the problem?
Then you will be told that. If the hairline is wrong or the pigment has blurred, adding more makes it worse; laser lightening and redesign is the correct route.
Is the review really free?
Yes, and there is no obligation to book. If your work has another year in it, that is what you will be told.
